JOHNSON CITY, N.Y. -- A community is grieving after two children died in a house fire early Monday morning.
Johnson City Firefighters were called to 145 Floral Avenue at 1:58 a.m. where a fire had engulfed a multi-family home.
According to WBNG-TV, two children were trapped on the third floor and were taken to UHS Wilson Hospital where they later died.
"It took them a while cause they had to put the fire out to get to the third floor, so it delayed their time to get up there," Johnson City Fire Chief Rob Jacyna told WBNG.
The children's parents were able to escape the fire, but not without suffering severe burns. They were transported to a burn unit in Syracuse.
Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire, but, according to WBNG, investigators suspect it may be arson.

Right, Edward Lynn, of Johnson City, consoles Michael Maxwell, of Binghamton, who is the father of the two boys who died in Monday's arson fire in Johnson City.
United in shock and grief, community members held candles aloft and sent paper lanterns floating into the night sky Monday during a vigil for the victims of a Johnson City fire that claimed the lives of two brothers, 3 and 4 years old.
The early Monday morning fire, which police say was intentionally set, also severely burned two women who leaped from a third-story window, including the boys' mother. They are listed in critical condition at a burn center in Syracuse.
"Two beautiful women and two innocent babies," said Patricia Baxter, of Castle Creek, whose daughter Jessica Baxter was one of the two adult victims, during Monday night's vigil. "Who does that to a family? Who tears us apart?"
She identified the two boys as Michael Maxwell and Joshua Maxwell and the other female victim as the boys' mother, Erica Kurtz. Jessica Baxter and Kurtz, both 27, have been friends since childhood, Patricia Baxter said. Police did not release the names of the victims Monday.
Police say Dwight Burton, 38, used an accellerant to start the fire in a hallway outside a third-floor apartment at 145 Floral Ave., as the victims slept. He has been charged with felony counts of first-degree murder and arson, Johnson City Police Chief Brent Dodge said Monday.

Fire suspect's prior arrests linked to domestic violence
8:28 p.m. EDT October 20, 2015
Officials await lab results after fire kills 2 boys; women remain in critical condition
The man accused of targeting a Johnson City woman by setting a fire that killed two children on Monday has a criminal history that includes multiple arrests linked to domestic violence, according to court documents.
Dwight Burton, 38, is accused of igniting the third-floor hallway of apartment housing at 145 Floral Ave. while the victims were asleep, killing 4-year-old Joshua Maxwell and 3-year-old Michael Maxwell.
Police say Burton’s intended target was Jessica Baxter, who was inside the apartment with the boys’ mother, Erica Kurtz.
Both women, who leaped from a third-story window, suffered severe burns. They remained in critical condition at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse on Tuesday.
Hours after the fire, Burton was charged with felony counts of first-degree murder and arson.
Criminal history
Court papers show that Burton has at least three felony convictions and multiple arrests in Broome County over the past 13 years.
In 2002, Burton was arrested following a dispute with an ex-girlfriend and another man in Binghamton, according to court documents. A supporting deposition filed by the second man claims Burton struck the man on the head with a gym bag and bit him after the man tried to break up a physical dispute between Burton and Burton’s ex-girlfriend.
Burton also was charged with possessing a knife.
The assault charge against Burton was eventually dismissed, but he was convicted of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a felony because of a previous conviction of fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, according to court documents. He was sentenced to five years' probation, the documents state.
In 2003, Burton was charged with violating an order of protection against the same ex-girlfriend.
According to the ex-girlfriend’s deposition in that case, Burton came to her apartment, destroyed her belongings and pulled her phone lines out of the wall. When she tried to get him to leave, Burton shoved her repeatedly, the deposition states.
He then attacked a female neighbor who tried to intervene before throwing the ex-girlfriend down the stairs, according to two depositions.
Burton was convicted of felony first-degree criminal contempt and third-degree assault, a misdemeanor.
He acquired a third felony conviction in 2005 when he was found guilty of third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance, court papers show. He was sentenced to three and a half years in jail, according to court documents.
Burton was arrested again in January of this year and charged with second-degree harassment in an incident involving Baxter, his intended target in Monday’s fire, according to police.
Burton was accused of punching Baxter in the face at an Endicott Avenue apartment in Johnson City. That case ended in an unconditional discharge for Burton.
